The Agricultural Sector at the Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) in Gaza has released a new fact sheet entitled: “Gaza Without a Honey Season: The Beekeeping Sector Amid the Genocidal War”
The paper reveals the scale of immense damage sustained by the beekeeping sector as a result of the latest war on Gaza, noting that this vital sector has become nearly collapsed.
🔍 Key findings highlighted in the paper include:
- Destruction of more than 76% of the vegetation cover on which bees rely for nourishment.
- Loss of 27,000 beehives out of a total of 30,000, representing over 90% of honey production capacity.
- Annual honey production has dropped from around 250 metric tons to approximately 20–25 metric tons.
- Local honey prices have surged from about 70 shekels per kilogram to over 150 shekels, due to the severe shortage.
🚜 The paper stressed the urgent need to:
✅ Prioritize the beekeeping sector within humanitarian and agricultural relief plans.
✅ Support beekeepers by providing replacement hives, production and treatment supplies.
✅ Facilitate the entry of essential equipment and veterinary materials to restart the sector.
⚖ It further emphasized that these actions amount to a clear violation of international humanitarian law, directly threatening the rights to food, livelihood, and environmental security.
