Factsheet: Impacts of each Israeli Occupation's Summer Offensive 2014 and Delay of Reconstruction on the Health Sector in the Gaza Strip

The factsheet addresses the health sector situation in the Gaza Strip and the sector deterioration since the Israeli offensive one year ago. Prepared by : Health Sector of the Palestinian NGO's Network.



23 of medical staff were killed while performing their duties.Facts about the health sector:




  1. 83 of medical staff were injured.

  2. 17 of health facilities exposed to various damages and meanwhile one hospital was destroyed.

  3. 56 health centers were damaged including 5 health centers were destroyed

  4. 24 ambulances were targeted; 14 of them were destroyed.

  5. 48 out of 97 health centers in the Gaza Strip were shut down.

  6. More than 360.000 children are in need for psychological and social treatment.

  7. 2147 are martyred including 530 children and 302 women.


Should there be no immediate solution of such medical issues; there will be a severe health catastrophe coincides with more complicated health difficulties such as follow:




  1. Acute shortage of 154 varieties of medicines; which caused a 32% shortage of the list of essential drugs.

  2. Lack of fuel quantities needed to operate the power generators of the Health Ministry's facilities. 20% only of the needed amounts of the fuel remaining in the ministry's fuel tanks.

  3. About 16% of the employees of the Ministry of Health were not paid their for more than 16 months.

Vision of the Health Sector on the Development and Reconstruction Process in the Gaza Strip. 




  1. Find international solutions within efforts to lift the Israeli occupation's blockade on the Gaza Strip without any restrictions imposed.

  2. Call upon the international community to intervene to secure protection to the civilians and stop the Israeli occupation's repeated violations against the civilians.

  3. Provide protection for the medical crews and health facilities in accordance with the International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

  4. Provide funding to guarantee the recovery and development needs of the health sector.

  5. Solve the chronic problems of the health sector in the Gaza Strip including the problems of salaries and lack of medicines and the problems facing human resources capacity development.

  6. Develop comprehensive national strategic plan that would unify the Palestinian health system at all levels including the level of primary and secondary care to meet the health needs of the population.

  7. Improve the coordination mechanism between the health service providers in the Gaza Strip.

  8. Integrally respond to the needs of patients, wounded, and marginalized groups.

  9. call for holding the Israeli occupation accountable for the violations committed against the health sector through the blockade and the 3 offensives that were launched against Gaza in past years.

  10. Document the state of blockade and its impacts on the health situation in the Gaza Strip

  11. Active involvement of the media in exposing the crimes of the occupation and the impact of the blockade on the health sector.
