Rasheeda Tlaib Set to Become the First Palestinian Woman in the US Congress

Gaza – August, 2018: Rasheeda Tlaib is an American with Palestinian roots who is very close of becoming the first Muslim woman in the US Congress after she had won the primary elections for District 13 in the state of Michigan.

Tlaib won the primary elections against several Democratic candidates on Tuesday, and she will run unopposed in the general elections in November, with no Republicans candidates. Thus, she will be the most likely candidate in the Democratic district.

Women's Affairs Center in Gaza (WAC) values Tlaib's victory and considers it as major accomplishment and success for Palestinians in general and women in particular as Palestinians are in dire need for the voices of objective and honest people who can speak about their cause and influence the international platforms.

Andy Goddeeris, Tlaib's Campaign Manager, mentioned that the winner of the primary elections would win the general elections. "There is no doubt about that," she added in a statement.

Many newspapers and international news agencies confirmed that Tlaib's success in the primary holds symbolic significance specially under the presidency of Donald Trump, who not only expressed his opposition to Islam in his speeches, but also through banning the entry of Muslims from seven Muslim-majority countries as well as North Korea and Venezuela to the U.S.A.

While holding the Palestinian flag after her victory, Tlaib gave a speech, saying, “I will fight back against every racist and oppressive structure. You deserve better than what we have today with our President Trump."

An American newspaper reported that Rasheeda Tlaib's election program focuses on promoting progressive values, proximity to voters, and the advancement of the state of Michigan. On the other hand, Tlaib stressed that many aspects of her identity played a key role in shaping her political perspective, such as gender, race, and religion, not to mention being a mother and having Arabic and Palestinian roots.

Tlaib, 43-year lawyer, was born in Detroit, the largest city in Michigan. She is the eldest daughter of Palestinian immigrants. Rasheeda started her political career in 2008 when she won a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives and became the first Muslim woman in the Michigan Legislature and the second in the United States of America.
