Factsheet: Impacts of each Israeli Occupation's Summer Offensive 2014 and Delayed Reconstruction on the Education Sector in the Gaza Strip

The education sector was hit hard during the last war on Gaza. This factsheet sheds some light on the damage sustained by the education sector.


Facts about the Education Sector:




  1. 50% of the Palestinian who were martyred during the Israeli occupation's offensive of summer 2014, were children and school students.

  2. 2385 of the war-wounded were children and school students. Their injuries were identified as moderate and critical.

  3. More than half a million of the male and female students in the Gaza Strip were subjected to either psychological shocks or were panicked or either very scared.

  4. 227 schools including 148 public schools and 75 UNRWA schools and 4 private schools, sustained damages.

  5. 23 public schools were completely damaged and non-functional

  6. 5 UNRWA schools were completely damaged and became non-functional.

  7. 115 schools were used as shelters for war refugees; 6 of them were bombed.

  8. 39 persons were killed and 290 persons were injured on an attack on one of the schools

  9. 6 higher education institutions sustained varying damages as a result of Israeli occupation's bombed.

  10. 19 higher education employees were martyred in the Israeli offensive of 2014.

  11. Students density increased in the schools' classrooms as a result of schools destruction and the restrictions imposed on the entry of building materials for the schools to be rebuilt and restored as a result of the Israeli occupation's blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip for the 9th year in arrow.

Vision of the Educational Sector on the Development and Reconstruction Process in the Gaza Strip.




  1. Take appropriate measures to end the Israeli occupations of Palestinian land.

  2. Put pressure on the Israeli occupation to lift the unjust blockade it imposes on the Gaza strip and allow the entry of construction and reconstruction materials into the Gaza Strip to rebuild and rehabilitate schools and educational institutions.

  3. Prosecute the Israeli occupation for its crimes against the education sector and its components and provide the international protection for the Palestinian education system.

  4. Support the education sector with finances through civil society organizations to realize the right to education.

  5. Immediately end all forms of division and restore the national unity including the unity of the education system and resume the salaries payment of the employees who salaries were cut as a result of the political split and provide Gaza employees with salaries and integrate them into the education system.

  6. Embrace education vision related to development project at all levels including at the level of politics, economy, society and culture, to take into account the needs of the Palestinian people and their quest to freedom and the establishment of an independent democratic state with Arab and Palestinian identity on basis of democracy and recognize their citizenship within the state.

  7. expanding the schooling sector to meet the growing demand of education and achieve higher quality education by reducing the students density in the classes and cancel the double shift system.

  8. Build the capacity of teachers and develop teacher preparation program and build an apprenticeship program for teachers.

  9. Strengthen the relationship, coordinate and cooperate with the Palestinian civil society organizations, to achieve development of the Palestinian education.

  10. Strengthen independence of the higher education institutions and promote the exercise of academic freedom and support them with financial needs.

  11. Strengthen coordination between the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the education institutions with regard to education programs and specializations to fit the needs of the market.

  12. Develop e-learning and computerize the curriculum and education management system and link it with complete and unified educational network.

  13. Oblige the new schools to consider the gender requirements and meet the needs of persons with disabilities.

  14. Develop psychological support program for the students and their parents within education programs in compelling circumstances.
